WAYS IN
A series of gentle art workshops for beginners.
Ways In, is a short series of gentle workshops designed
to help you look at, talk about, and make art without
pressure, jargon, or right answers.
No experience needed.
Each session can be attended on its own.

What will we be doing?
Workshop One: Thinking About Art
We start by loosening the idea that art has to be “understood”.
This session introduces simple ways of thinking about artworks without art-speak or theory. We focus on noticing, questioning, and allowing uncertainty — thinking as a process, not a performance.

Workshop Two: Looking at Art Together (No Panic)
A gentle, guided gallery visit.
We look at a small number of artworks, slowly and collectively.
There is no expectation to interpret, analyse, or explain.
You can:
-
Observe quietly
-
Share a thought
-
Change your mind
-
Say nothing at all
Looking together is enough.

Workshop Three: Speaking About Art
This session explores how to talk about what you see without needing the “right” words.
We practise:
-
Speaking from observation, not expertise
-
Using ordinary language
-
Allowing doubt, humour, and contradiction
You’ll learn how to say something without feeling exposed.
Workshop Four: Making Art — Now You Try
The final session shifts from looking to doing.
You’ll respond to artworks through:
-
Drawing
- Writing
- Mark-making
-
Annotation
Nothing is judged.
Nothing has to be finished.
This is about thinking through making, not producing results.

Optional Group Exhibition
Participants will also be invited (entirely optionally) to take part in a small group exhibition at a later date, showcasing work made during or inspired by the workshop.
There’s no obligation to exhibit — this is simply an opportunity for those who would like to share their work publicly in a supportive, informal setting.
